Discussing the Power of Cultural Export through the Fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral

On the morning of April 16, 2019, when we woke up from our dreams as usual and picked up our phones to check social media, we were immediately bombarded with phrases like "Notre-Dame de Paris is on fire" and "Quasimodo has lost his beloved and his bell tower." After a brief moment of shock, we couldn't help but let out a heavy sigh in our hearts.

Notre-Dame de Paris caught fire

On the morning of April 16, 2019, when we woke up from our dreams as usual and picked up our phones to open our social media, we were immediately bombarded with phrases like "Notre-Dame de Paris is on fire" and "Quasimodo has lost his beloved and his bell tower." After a brief moment of shock, we would let out a heavy sigh in our hearts.

People are deeply worried

As time passed, reports continued to come in from the front lines. According to the latest news, the fire has become stable. Firefighters stated that the main structure of Notre-Dame de Paris has been "saved," and the overall main structure remains intact.

On the morning of the 16th Beijing time, People's Daily Weibo posted, "Currently, there are no obvious flames or thick smoke at Notre-Dame de Paris, and citizens are praying in the night."

French President Macron stated, "Like all my fellow Frenchmen, I am very sad tonight to see a part of our hearts burned away."

German Foreign Minister Maas said, "The burning of Notre-Dame also breaks our hearts. We pray for our French friends and hope no one is harmed by the fire."

A brief discussion on the fire incident

In fact, there have been many historical sites destroyed throughout history; some were forgotten after their destruction, while others captured the hearts of people around the world. So what causes this phenomenon? The main reasons may be twofold. First, it is due to the building itself. Notre-Dame de Paris is the first completely Gothic church in European history, pioneering European architectural history, and holds epoch-making significance in architectural history. It is also one of the oldest and most representative monuments in Paris. As the most magnificent and oldest Catholic church in Paris, it perfectly integrates faith, spirit, history, and culture, forming a beautiful work of art. The second reason is due to Hugo's novel "Notre-Dame de Paris." In this novel, Hugo devoted a large portion to describing Notre-Dame. It is precisely because of Hugo's depiction that readers are presented with a touching story, cloaking Notre-Dame in a layer of mystery, while also reinvigorating this ancient church, making people feel a unique connection to Quasimodo, the gypsy girl, and the building itself, which lingers in their hearts. Some excerpts from the novel have even been included in language textbooks. Therefore, when the news of the fire at Notre-Dame broke, people stopped to pray and flooded social media, causing such a significant impact. This is also a manifestation of cultural output; it is invisible and intangible, yet it truly exists and can even be more powerful than actual material.

It is worth mentioning that according to subsequent reports, the bell tower was not burned down, and in the story, Quasimodo lives in the bell tower. Nevertheless, people still express their feelings with the phrase "Quasimodo has lost his beloved and his bell tower," which shows how deep an impression Hugo's novel has left in people's hearts.

From this perspective, although cultural power is intangible, its impact can be infinitely large. Thus, it can be seen that for a company to succeed, it must not only achieve success in its business but also have a good cultural atmosphere. From the refinement of employees' speech to the public relations image of the company, all of these subtly change people's perceptions of it.
